College Football has three ranked-on-ranked games this weekend: 16 Texas A&M @ 8 Notre Dame, 6 Georgia @ 15 Tennessee, and 18 South Florida @ 5 Miami. Notre Dame has the most to prove. If they lose, they are likely out of the College Football Playoff race. Their remaining schedule won't be strong enough to help them get in, even if they win out (no ranked opponents). Georgia versus Tennessee is the best matchup of the weekend, as the two SEC programs with differing narratives face off in Knoxville. Tennessee and quarterback Joey Aguilar have been better than expected, and some have questioned if Georgia is overrated. Well, on Saturday afternoon, both programs will get a better feel for where they stand. Finally, South Florida has defeated two ranked opponents, 25 Boise State and 13 Florida, to start their season. Now they head to Miami to take the fifth-ranked team in the nation. A game that isn't getting the network broadcast it deserves (on the CW).
For the NFL, the Eagles head to Kansas City for a Super Bowl rematch. It may seem like a must-win for the Chiefs, but it's not. They have the Giants and Jaguars in two of the next three weeks. The Lions host Ben Johnson and the Bears. The Lions' former OC returns following a debut loss to the Vikings on Monday Night Football. The Lions are coming off an awful Week 1 loss to the Packers. While the Ben Johnson element will dominate the headlines, this is an important divisional matchup for two teams with one divisional loss already. Starting 0-2 in the division is an early-season blow neither team wants on their resumé.
What to Watch: Film and Television
Stephen King's The Long Walk releases in theatres this weekend. With Mark Hamill as the lead, it should be a fun watch. The trailer portrays a tense social commentary with real human consequences. Only Murders in the Building also returned this week. With the dawn of streaming, it will likely receive a second wave of viewership this weekend. What wild murder mystery do they have in store this year? Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez return for another season of the unique blend of mystery and comedy.
What to Watch: Detroit Sports
Michigan and Michigan State play cupcake games. They should win big. The Red Wings have their prospect tournament, with several recent first-round picks participating (Nate Danielson, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, Carter Bear, and Axel Sandin-Pellikka.
The Tigers' magic number is down to 8. The Tigers need to take advantage of this weekend's series against the Marlins. Their recent series against lesser opponents (Athletics, White Sox) has had bad results. If they can manage to sweep Miami, the number could get as low as two after the weekend. Tigers need to slam the door shut and focus on playoff seeding instead.
The Lions have the most important game this weekend. It is covered above, but it's worth mentioning again: this is an important game. From 2022 to 2024, the Lions posted a 15-3 divisional record. The divisional dominance coming to an end should concern Lions fans. Ben Johnson coming to Ford Field and defeating the Lions would exacerbate the already panicked fanbase.
